These Arms of Mine Page 20

Immediately his head lifted from her shoulder, concern and apprehension emanating from every aspect of his being. “Another contraction?”

“Yes.” She began to pant slightly. “How long has it been since the last one?”

“About fifteen minutes.” He nervously glanced at his watch.

They both looked at each other, and she could tell he was quickly beginning to panic. “Derrick, calm down. Women have babies every day.”

“Not my wife!” He jumped up and anxiously began pacing to and fro, unable to decide what to do first. “Can you walk? Do I need to carry you?”

Between the pain and panting breaths, she began to laugh hysterically, unable to stop herself. He was so funny!

“Derrick! Derrick, relax, baby,” she pleaded through giggles.

He finally decided on a course of action, running to grab her already packed suitcase. Then he picked up both of their coats and his car keys before rushing back to the sofa where she sat doubled over in pain and laughter.

“It’s not nice to laugh at your newest senator.” He held out his hands to help her to her feet.

“If your constituents could see you now.” She kissed his cheek gently as he pulled her upright. “Don’t forget to call Momma and Robert.”

  “I’ll call from the car.”

He placed her coat around her shoulders before leading her slowly, yet urgently, to the door. She fought against another bout of laughter as she glanced at his tense, terrified expression.

“I love you.” She suddenly stopped, smiled and kissed his lips thoroughly and, she hoped, comfortingly.

  “I love you, too.”

When she once again winced in pain, he bent down to scoop her up into his strong arms, tossing the suitcase and his coat carelessly onto the floor.

“We’d better get out of here before this baby is born, because there’s no way I’m going to deliver him or her.” His face and tone were so serious that she couldn’t contain another outbreak of hysterical laughter.

“Let’s go have our baby,” she agreed between chuckles.

“I’m with you.” He smiled before nearly running out of the door with his panting, giggling wife.
